I got slammed as ‘inappropriate’ for my trendy wedding guest outfit – trolls say I showed too much skin but I don’t care
A WOMAN who was slammed for her “inappropriate” wedding guest outfit has hit back at trolls.
Olivia Burrows Sutherland opted for a boob tube and tiered maxi skirt – an ensemble that saw her caught in the middle of a social media storm.
The 29-year-old was accused of being inappropriate, opting for a top that looks like underwear and wearing a colour too close to white.
Despite being in “love” with her outfit, the bridal influencer’s comment section was flooded with criticism.
She has now hit back that the bride and groom were happy with her outfit as she argued her choice was appropriate for a wedding in 37 degree heat with a cocktail dress code.
Olivia, from Melbourne, Aus said: “I didn’t expect the outfit to be so controversial, but I do know when it comes to weddings and wedding guest attire, everyone has an opinion.
“Cocktail attire permits skin to be showing and as the volume and length of the skirt is extremely modest.
“I believe pairing it with a plain crop top, with my hair styled down providing extra coverage, maintains the appropriate balance and silhouette suitable for a wedding that has a ‘cocktail dress code’ in 37 degree heat.”
Speaking to news.com.au about the backlash, Olivia assured she would have worn something more formal if the wedding had a black tie dress code.
The video she posted on TikTok for her 73,000 followers has since gone viral.
At the time of writing, it had totted up almost 500k views and almost 12k likes.
When one troll told Olivia that her top looked like underwear, one person replied, “100% agree” while another bitterly penned, “cheap undergarment”.
Another wrote: “Skirt is lovely but the top looks like you’re going to the gym.
“Underwhelming really.
“Shoes aren’t the best either.”
Some claimed that her cream bandeau was too close to white in colour.
Arriving in white to someone else’s nuptials has always been deemed bad form over fears of upstaging or upsetting the bride.
However, other viewers jumped to Olivia’s defence and affirmed the her outfit was suitable for a cocktail party if she knew the newlyweds would be fine with it.
Olivia added: “At the end of the day, I know the bride, groom and the guests and I knew this would be perfectly OK.
“That’s all that matters.
“Nobody I know has even mentioned it as being an issue.”
