Man in his 20s dies after group gets into difficulty while swimming
A young man has died after three people got into difficulty while swimming off the Irish coast.
Gardai was called to Whiting Bay in Ardmore, Co Waterford, at around 1.30pm on Friday afternoon.
The Coast Guard brought three people who were struggling in the water onto shore.
An air ambulance lifted the unnamed 21-year-old to Cork University Hospital but he was later pronounded dead. The other two were uninjured.
The incident is being treated as a tragic accident and a file is currently being prepared for the coroner.
Just over two weeks ago, a swimmer was swept out to sea at Little Fistral beach, near Newquay in Cornwall.
RNLI lifeboats had to set out on a daring rescue mission which was helped by the fact that the woman was wearing a bright pink hat.
She was also holding a pink float which was noticed by someone on the shore who called 999.
The whole thing was caught on camera by the coastguard who filmed the woman being pulled out of the water and helped into the helicopter.
Coastguard Matt Rogers said: ‘This swimmer had done a considerable amount to give herself a chance of being rescued if things went wrong.
‘She not only had a float that was a bright pink colour but was wearing a hat of the same colour too.
‘It meant our caller could help give us information that enabled the swimmer to be rescued quickly.
‘It’s a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong even for the most experienced and why you should do all you can to help us help you if the worst happens.’
