A GARDENING fan has revealed why you should never water your plants on a schedule.
The plant pro explained a healthy plant is usually never thriving because of scheduled watering.
Tanner Mitchell also known as @TannerThePlanter online runs a TikTok account designed to give people helpful tips on indoor and outdoor gardening.
With over 3.1 million TikTok followers Tanner knows a thing or two about plants and he’s busting key myths about scheduled plant watering.
After a customer brought in a dying plant, Tanner learned that the customer had been watering the plant everyday which was likely the cause of its deterioration.
He said: “The customer said her mum waters this plant every Tuesday and while it’s nice to be in a routine, plants don’t necessarily need to be watered on a schedule.”
“Now that’s not to say you can’t be successful watering on a schedule. But it can leave less room for error.”
Tanner explains when most people water a plant on a schedule they assume that is the reason why the plant is thriving.
“One of the biggest downfalls of plant care is when someone has success watering on a schedule.”
“And they tell they tell there friend ‘Hey water this plant every seven days’ for example.”
But the gardening fan explains there are likely other factors contributing the the plants healthy state.
“But what they are not considering is they might have different conditions within their home actually, I just about guarantee it.”

“Several factors determine how quickly a plant will dry out and need water like light,humidity, air flow, soil composition and drainage.”
Tanner says all these factors need to be balanced for a plant to thrive so you should never water a plant on a schedule.
“So we never water on a schedule.”
In the end Tanner realised his clients plant was deteriorating because the pot size was too big.
He said: “When root ball size decreases (usually due to root rot) we have to accommodate for that change.”
However if you do like to work on a schedule Tanner recommends checking your plant on a schedule and only watering your plant when it needs moisture.
He said: “It’s a good idea to check your houseplants on a schedule, but I never advise watering on a schedule. Instead, check the plants moisture level and water when it needs it!”
