Ex-cop who shot into Breonna Taylor’s home hired as sheriff’s deputy

One of the Louisville Metro Police Officers involved in the fatal raid on Breonna Taylor’s home was hired in another law enforcement role.

Myles Cosgrove, the ex-police officer who fired into Taylor’s home on March 13, 2020, was hired as a deputy by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, northeast of the city.

Taylor, a 26-year-old black paramedic, was killed in the shooting. Her death sparked a series of Black Lives Matter protests the same year.

Cosgrove, along with LMPD officers Brett Hankison and Jonathan Mattingly, executed a search warrant and breached the front door at the apartment of Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker.

Walker fired a warning shot at the intruders, who he did not recognize as police. The cops fired back 32 times.

Walker was uninjured, but Taylor, who was asleep in her bed, was struck by six bullets. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A federal ballistics expert later determined that the fatal shot most likely came from Cosgrove, who fired 16 shots through the apartment doorway over the course of a few seconds.

Cosgrove was eventually fired from the LMPD in January 2021, nine months after the fatal raid.

A Kentucky grand jury eventually indicted Hankison on three charges of reckless endangerment for blindly firing through the apartment’s patio window, but Cosgrove has never faced charges for firing the fatal shot.

In August 2022, Hankison and three other LMPD officers were charged by the Justice Department with violating Taylor’s civil rights by unlawfully planning and then trying to cover up the raid where she eventually died.

Carroll County Chief Deputy Robert Miller told local station WHAS-11 this played a role in their decision to hire the ex-officer.

‘We looked to the fact that the US Attorney General stated there was no evidence that he had any involvement in the preparation of the search, and the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council determined not to initiate a hearing to revoke his police certification,’ Miller said.
