Mrs Hinch fans share the best way to keep washing machine drawers mould free after one woman’s laundry nightmare
KEEPING your washing machine clean is a chore in itself, but it doesn’t have to be a total nightmare if you do it right.
Because of the damp environment, washing machines are prone to damp smells and mould, but you can keep yours sparkling clean with a few tricks.
After one woman shared her own struggle with keeping her washing machine draws mould free, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch shared some of the easiest ways to tackle to problem.
Posting in the Facebook group Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, the woman explained she washed the drawer of her washing machine two weeks ago, but it’s already covered in mould.
“I’ve done a few wash loads since and it’s looking like this,” she wrote in the post, alongside a picture of a very mouldy looking drawer.
Luckily, the keen cleaners had a few tricks up their sleeves, including one that’s totally free.
It turns out leaving the drawer open between is to main method most of the cleaning fans swear by.
“After every wash take drawer out and leave it on side or in drum, air stops it going mouldy,” one wrote.
A second agreed: “After every wash I take drawer out and empty any excess water left in the drawer sections.
“Then I put it back but I leave it open and also I leave the door open to give it chance to air and dry out, it really helps if you can always remember to do this after every wash.”
Meanwhile, others thought the problem might be so bad because of the amount of fabric softener the woman uses.
“Might be using to much powder and softener,” one Facebook user mused.
Another said: “Fabric softener contains live organisms which is why it goes like that (heat and damp). Try leaving the drawer open between washes.”
“This the reason why I don’t use fabric conditioners, I used to get that black gunge when I did and thought it can’t do the fabrics any good.
“Now I just use white vinegar in the conditioner draw and never get the mess,” someone else commented.
For getting rid of built up mould and grime, the cleaning fans suggested mould and mildew remover spray, or soaking the drawer in diluted bleach for a few hours.
