‘On stand-by’ – Fabrizio Romano provides update on Spurs and James Maddison

Fabrizio Romano has said that Tottenham will only push ahead with a move for James Maddison after they have appointed a new head coach.

Multiple publications have reported over the last week that Spurs have moved into pole position to snap up Maddison this summer (Telegraph).

It has been suggested that Leicester have accepted that the England international is on his way out and would be willing to sell him for around £50m.

Football Insider even claimed on April 9 that Spurs do not want to blow the lead they have over the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle in the race for the Foxes star and are thus prepared to make a move for him even before they hire a new head coach.

The publication asserted that Tottenham view the 26-year-old as a potential superstar and thus do not feel they need the approval of their next head coach in order to move for him.

However, Romano has now dismissed that claim, remarking that the Lilywhites’ move for Maddison is on stand-by until a new manager comes through the door.

The journalist told Caught Offside: “Tottenham are monitoring James Maddison, for sure.

“Also, Newcastle have his name on their list since last August as he’s always been appreciated. 

“We have to understand who’s going to be the new Tottenham boss to see if they will bid for Maddison, as at the moment it’s on standby.”

The idea that Spurs could make any big-money moves before they appoint a new head coach sounds ridiculous as one would expect the new man to be allowed the mould the squad in the manner that he wishes.

While all managers would love to have a player of Maddison’s quality at their disposal, they might have a different idea regarding how best to allocate the club’s transfer budget in order to have a balanced squad that suits their style of play.
