Dublin's pitching duo too much for Spartans, Amador Valley softball slays another giant, St. Francis softball remains perfect, and more
No. 6 Dublin 3, No. 4 De La Salle 2
Dublin’s pitching duo of Colin Glines and Tyler Thompson helped the Gaels do something the team’s senior class had never accomplished before — defeat East Bay Athletic League powerhouse De La Salle.
Dublin’s 3-2 victory over the Spartans came a little over a year after De La Salle routed them 19-1. Glines allowed one hit through six innings, and Thompson closed out the game in the seventh.
“De La Salle has been our number one team to beat,” said Glines, adding “and we just did it”
De La Salle led off the first inning with a soft single by Kai Smith, and Connor Harrison drove him in on a sacrifice fly. That was it for scoring by either team until the fifth.
Dublin batted around the lineup in that inning, starting it off with two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Jaden D’Souza drove in one run on an infield single, and Carston Pearson drove in two more.
Smith Chandler cut the Dublin lead to one run in the sixth inning with a RBI, and the Spartans had two runners on with no outs in the seventh inning. Thompson settled down after that though, and Dublin came away with the victory.
“It was amazing,” Glines said of Thompson’s performance. “That’s my best friend right there, and he just came through to lock it down for me.”
Dublin improved to 12-2 and 4-1 in league play, while De La Salle dropped to 11-4 and 5-1 in the league.
Sequoia 1, No. 16 St. Ignatius 0
Max Stallings was exceptional in Sequoia’s 1-0 non-league victory over St. Ignatius. The junior allowed four hits and no runs in a complete game shutout. Senior Aaron Melz drove in the only run of the day, going 2 for 3 with a double. SI’s Jackson Short also had a superb showing on the mound, throwing a complete game and striking out six. Sequoia improved to 7-5-1, and St. Ignatius fell to 10-6.
No. 17 Pioneer 4, Westmont 1
Pioneer improved to 10-4-1 and 6-3 in league play with a 4-1 victory over Westmont. Juniors Noah Morales, Nathan Tichy and Cesar Sancen combined for seven of Pioneer’s 14 hits. Sancen had two RBIs too. Tichy struck out seven Westmont batters and allowed two hits while pitching the whole game. Junior Aiden Kobata drove in Westmont’s (8-8) one run.
Sacred Heart Prep 9, No. 15 Menlo-Atherton 5
SHP had six different players collect at least one RBI in a high-scoring victory over ranked Menlo-Atherton in a non-league matchup. Connor Schmalzle and Tyler Wong led SHP (12-4-1) with two RBIs each. Wong also totaled two stolen bases, and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. M-A (10-4) senior Davis Phillips went 4 for 4 and scored two runs.
Pittsburg 11, Deer Valley 1
Pittsburg improved to 11-5 with an easy victory over Bay Valley Athletic League opponent Deer Valley. Cole Leschak went 2 for 4 with a triple, and Ty Thompson and Daniel Trujillo each drove in two runs apiece. Pittsburg pitcher Josh Painter struck out nine and allowed only two hits in seven innings. Deer Valley’s Lincoln Adams drove in the team’s only run of the night.
Amador Valley 4, No. 2 San Ramon Valley 3
For the third time in a week, Amador Valley upset a Top-10 team in the Bay Area News Group rankings. After defeating Archbishop Mitty and Livermore this weekend, the Dons took down No. 2 San Ramon Valley 4-3 in an EBAL extra-inning walk-off stunner.
On the last pitch of the 11th inning, Aleena Helms slapped a ground ball that was too tough to handle for the San Ramon Valley fielder. Kaylee Davis ran home from second base and secured Amador Valley’s seventh victory of the season.
Davis pitched all 11 innings, giving up one earned run and striking out 10. Dueling her was SRV pitcher Paige McLeod, who struck out eight batters in a thrilling game.
With the game tied at 1-1 entering the 11th, SRV’s Ava Lyons drove in Sophia Jin and Brianna Schapiro to give the visitors a two-run cushion. Mai Falcone answered right back for Amador Valley, slamming a two-run homer to tie the game, and set up Helms for her heroics a few batters later.
Amador Valley is now 7-9 and 2-3 in EBAL play, while San Ramon Valley dropped to 12-3 and 4-1.
No. 1 St. Francis 10, No. 15 Branham 0
The Lancers continued to prove why they are the No. 1 team in the Bay Area with another dominant victory over a ranked team, this time winning 10-0 over No. 15 Branham in a non-league matchup. St. Francis pitchers Kate Munnerlyn and Shannon Keighran combined for 12 strikeouts and only two hits allowed. Senior Carly Cummings had three RBIs and senior Alexis O’Gorman drove in two runs. Sophomore Ava Bulanti hit a solo home run.
No. 6 Capuchino 14, Burlingame 1
Capuchino (13-2) improved to a perfect 5-0 in league play with a rout over Burlingame (2-5). Capuchino sophomore Avery Motroni went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs, and Madison Choi, Lola Sierra and Elizabeth Do each had two RBIs. Nohemi Livingston threw six innings and did not allow an earned run.
