Legendary kids’ film series set to return with NEW movie 22 years after smash-hit original
AN iconic kids film franchise looks set to return for its fifth outing with the original voice cast on board to make a comeback.
It first debuted 22 years ago but the Shrek film franchise is close to being revived for a fifth movie.
Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy are all in talks to return to voice the animated favourites once again.
The title character, Ogre, Shrek was voiced by Mike Myers with Cameron taking on the role of his beloved Princess Fiona.
Joining them was Eddie Murphy as Donkey to make the ultimate trio.
DreamWorks Animation creative partner Chris Meledandri confirmed that talks with the original stars are going well with them all on board to return.
Speaking to Variety, Chris said: “We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”
Chris also discussed Eddie Murphy’s comments that he would sign up to a fifth film in “two seconds”, saying it proved his commitment to the film’s legacy.
He said: “It’s evidence of his strong enthusiasm for a role that he so brilliantly inhabited and really created alongside the artists at DreamWorks. I found that comment to be very exciting.”
Shrek first hit cinema screens in 2001 and has since released a further three films in the years following.
It has been 13 years since the last full-length movie in the franchise, titled Shrek Forever After.
