British woman, 28, dies during gastric band surgery in Turkey
A 28-year-old British woman died during a weight-loss surgery in Turkey, leaving her friends and family ‘devastated’.
Shannon Bowe, from Falkirk, Scotland, passed away while having a gastric band fitted on Friday, The Sun reports.
The procedure involves a band being placed around the stomach to make a patient feel full quicker, and should only take around an hour to complete.
It’s so far unclear what complications led to Shannon’s death.
Her boyfriend Ross Stirling paid tribute to his ‘angel’, writing online: ‘Sleep tight my angel, love you forever and always.’
Messages from friends have also poured in across social media, with some describing the young Scot as one of the ‘kindest of souls’.
A friend said: ‘Everyone is totally devastated. Shannon was one of the kindest people I knew and she would do anything for anyone.
‘These operations obviously are risky, but it is so rare you hear of this happening.
‘Everyone is finding it really hard to believe she is no longer with us.’
The friend also said Shannon did not have travel insurance, meaning her family have to spend thousands to bring her back to the UK.
Her aunt, Amanda Bowe, wrote on Facebook: ‘My beautiful niece Shannon, there are no words, just heartbreak and grief. Life can be so cruel.
‘She was a beautiful, funny, crazy girl who will always live in my heart.’
Last year Joe Thornley, from Derbyshire, died during a botched weight-loss surgery in Turkey.
He decided to get a sleeve gastrectomy to remove a large part of his stomach.
A Turkish doctor claimed he suffered a heart attack during the operation, but a post-mortem examination revealed he died from internal bleeding.
