Good ole fashioned pitchers’ duel at Wrigley Field on Saturday between Justin Steele and Brandon Woodruff, but Ian Happ finally got the Cubs on the board, hitting the team’s first home run of the season.
Happ capped off a great at-bat in the sixth inning, fighting off nasty change ups from Woodruff before hitting one through the wind and into the basket to right field for first Cubs home run of 2023.
Happ started the at-bat, falling behind 0-2 and after fouling off four pitches he was all over the 96mph fastball from Woodruff.
No doubt that Happ will command a big free agent contract following the 2023 season if he replicates or improves upon his 2022 season, then he’ll be getting a $100 million+ deal. This upcoming free agent class certainly doesn’t have many top hitters, so Happ will be near the top of the list.
