Murder probe as woman dies after being found badly injured in Brighton property – while 47-year-old man is bailed
A MURDER investigation is underway tonight after a woman discovered with serious injuries in Brighton later died in hospital.
Emergency services charged to the property on Cowley Drive shortly before 5pm on Thursday following concerns for welfare.
They discovered a woman with serious injuries and after emergency treatment, she was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in the city.
But despite the efforts of medics, she tragically died on Saturday.
Her next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time.
A post-mortem to determine how she died has not yet taken place.
A 47-year-old man from nearby Newhaven, East Sussex, was arrested on suspicion of murder but has been released on bail.
People living in homes near to the scene said they were shocked to hear what had happened.
One neighbour said: “I’ve been told that someone saw a person running from the house covered in blood.
“They said he was running to a neighbour’s house or that he just got on a bus.
Another neighbour said: “I got home at about quarter to seven and saw a police van and police car parked in the road.
“I then saw a few officers, less than ten, running to and from the vehicles and the house.
“I’m not concerned for me, just concerned for the welfare of the people that live there.”
One other neighbour said: “They’re a nice family in that house but usually just keep themselves to themselves.
“I see the bloke out regularly and we always say hello.”
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Officers in Brighton have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
“Emergency services were called to Cowley Drive shortly before 5pm on Thursday after concerns were raised for the welfare of a woman.”
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell added: “This is a fast-moving investigation and the public can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
“There is not believed to any wider risk to the public and we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident at this time.
“Anyone with information which may assist the investigation is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting Operation Bradwall.”
