More reports of forced abortions, including on viable, late-term unborn babies, are coming out of North Korea.
A new report from the NGO Korea Future, a human rights organization based in London, includes horrific evidence of torture, starvation, sexual abuse and forced abortions inside North Korean prisons, according to CNN.
In one case, a pregnant woman who was imprisoned for trying to escape from the country was forced to abort her third-trimester unborn baby, according to the organization. Another witness said he saw guards repeatedly raping female prisoners.
Korea Future investigator Kim Jiwon, who interviewed former prisoners for the report, said it was “really, really difficult to hear their stories,” the International Business Times reports. Kim said some of the escaped prisoners were brainwashed into thinking they deserved the torture.
“I can’t even fathom how they felt, and what they had to go through,” Kim said.
In total, the organization documented evidence of more than 1,000 human rights abuses, including torture, rape, starvation and other cruelties.
It compared North Korean prisons to the former Soviet gulags in Russia, saying the goal is not to “detain and rehabilitate persons” or “increase public safety.” The purpose “is to isolate persons from society whose behavior conflicts with upholding the singular authority of the Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un,” according to its report.

Korea Future issued its findings to call on international powers to investigate and prosecute the abuses.
According to CNN:
North Korea frequently denies allegations of human rights abuses — in its prisons or elsewhere — often claiming they are part of a US-orchestrated campaign against it. This week, soon after a UN meeting on the human rights situation in the country, North Korea released a statement saying it “resolutely denounces and rejects” what it characterized as a “US-waged human rights pressure campaign.”
However, many other reports from the United Nations and other human rights organizations have found evidence of similar abuses in the past decade.
In 2021, another former North Korean refugee told the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, a human rights organization in Washington, D.C., that she was forced to abort her unborn baby without anesthesia while serving in the military, The Daily Star reported. “Jennifer Kim,” a 23-year-old North Korean defector, said she became pregnant after a superior officer sexually abused her.
Other reports also have exposed nightmarish details about forced abortions, infanticide, torture and other human rights abuses in North Korean prisons and labor camps. The gruesome details are reminiscent of Nazi concentration camps and Soviet gulags. Reports out of North Korea indicate that pregnant women have been jabbed with hot irons, forced to lay on the ground while their stomachs are crushed with a board, poisoned and kicked in the stomach to kill their unborn babies.
Evidence of mass forced abortions by government officials also has been uncovered in Nigeria and China.
