Manchester United Under-21 faced Everton U21 in Premier League 2 at Leigh Sports Village yesterday.
The youngsters emerged as the 4-1 winners thanks to a sensational hat-trick from Omari Nathan Forson and a goal by Joe Hugill.
The Red Devils, who sit in sixth place in the league, were looking to extend their five-game winning streak after a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers U21 on January 28.
With an eye on a top-three finish, the game was an excellent example of what the youngsters can achieve.
The headlines from the match were grabbed by Forson, who scored a hat trick to get his side over the line.
The game started with United missing a few opportunities before Hugill, the recently crowned Premier League 2 Player of the Month, slotted in the first goal in the 28th minute.
The United number nine was joined on the scoresheet by Forson, who scored in the 33rd minute to double his team’s lead.
Everton also had a few chances of their own and halved the deficit in the 38th minute via a goal from Liam Thomas Higgins.
Everton dominated the initial exchanges after the break but spurned several chances. However, United ran away with the win as two more goals from Forson secured the victory.
Despite patches where Everton looked the better side, United more or less dominated the game. They finished the contest with 59 percent possession and eight out of 15 attempted shots on target.
United remain sixth in the table with 25 points from 17 games and will look to close the gap on league leaders Chelsea, who have 32 points from the same number of matches.
