The municipal corporation of Ludhiana is taking "serious action" against those polluting the Sidhwan Canal by issuing challans and/or recommending firings against them, but the civic officials are still silent about removing the garbage dump located on the banks of the canal near Gill Bridge. Garbage from nearby 56 wards is regularly being thrown at this dump and the activists have also objected to it as when the solid waste is lifted from this dump trash also falls into the water body further polluting it. However, the civic officials have pulled the dump back by a few feet taking it away from the canal but a strong stench still fills the air from the heaps of trash that come here on a daily basis. Meanwhile, activist Kapil Arora who had also approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT) said "it is just because of the pressure of the NGT that the authorities have started cleaning the canal. The civic officials are well aware of the consequences of dumping the waste near any water body, but they continued doing the same till the matter reached the NGT."
