Weston McKennie rejects $32 million move to Aston Villa
Weston McKennie has reportedly rejected a chance to move on from Juventus. The United States men’s national team star supposedly dismissed the opportunity to play for Bournemouth and Aston Villa.
Corriere dello Sport reports that McKennie rejected the two Premier League clubs in hopes that bigger teams will enter the race for his signature. Villa are currently 11th in the English top flight. However, they received a bit of a boost since Unai Emery arrived as head coach. In fact, the West Midlands club has only lost one league match since the Spaniard arrived in early November.
Bournemouth, on the other hand, are just one point from the relegation zone at the moment. The Cherries have lost every league game since returning from the World Cup break. They haven’t even scored a goal in these four matches. Along with their Premier League woes, Bournemouth has also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in recent weeks as well.
McKennie spurns Aston Villa with Dortmund, Chelsea and Spurs interested
The aforementioned report suggests that both clubs offered Juve’s asking price of $32 million. McKennie is, however, hoping that Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, or Borussia Dortmund step up their interest. Spurs are supposedly negotiating with the Italian club for the American midfielder. The north London outfit could certainly use reinforcements in midfield.
McKennie had links with Chelsea before. A move would make sense, as the club has an American owner. The Blues are currently struggling in the Premier League as well, sitting just one spot above Villa in the standings. Chelsea also have multiple midfielders set to be out of contract in June.
Talks of a possible move to Dortmund have also been reported for weeks. McKennie previously played very well for fellow German side Schalke prior to his transfer to Juve in 2020.
Despite being up for sale, the USMNT midfielder is still regularly being utilized for Juve. In fact, McKennie has started all three Serie A games since returning from a minor injury.
