Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs Wants to Force Residents to Fund Abortions
The new Democrat governor of Arizona, Katie Hobbs, wants to defund charities that help homeless women and children and give tax dollars to abortion facilities instead.
Cathi Herrod, president of the pro-life Center for Arizona Policy, criticized Hobbs’ proposed budget in an op-ed at AZ Central, noting how homeless charities already are stretched to the limit. She called out the governor for prioritizing elective, unnecessary abortions above vulnerable women’s and children’s needs.
“More than 70 pregnant, homeless women call Maggie’s Place each week, desperate for help. With just 26 beds available, the maternity home is forced to turn away many endangered women,” Herrod said of the Phoenix charity.
Many of the women have been abused or trafficked, or they are struggling with an addiction, she said. But because Maggie’s Place does not encourage abortions, Hobbs plans to strip its funding.
“No abortions, no funding. These are the most vulnerable of the growing homeless in Arizona, where we led the nation in the rise of homelessness in 2021, with an increase of 30%,” Herrod wrote.
According to the op-ed, Hobbs’ proposed budget removes $500,000 in state funding for charities like the maternity home, while allocating $6.1 million to a federal family planning program, Title X, that primarily funds abortion facilities (Planned Parenthood has been one of its largest recipients for many years).

Herrod said the new governor repeatedly claimed she would be a “governor for everyone” on the campaign trail, but her actions contradict her words.
“Hobbs coined a nifty phrase to appeal to a diverse Arizona, claiming she is a ‘governor for everyone,’” Herrod wrote. “Apparently not for pregnant, homeless women …”
A pro-abortion Democrat, Hobbs consistently has voted against legislation to protect unborn babies. In 2012, she opposed the Mother’s Health and Safety Act, a bill to prohibit abortions after 20 weeks. Hobbs also voted against a bill to ban sex-selection abortions and another to require abortionists to provide basic medical care to babies who survive abortions.
In October on “Face the Nation,” she avoided answering a question about whether she supports any limits on killing unborn babies in abortions.
“Abortion is a very personal decision that belongs between a woman and her doctor,” Hobbs replied. “The government and politicians don’t belong in that decision. We need to let doctors perform the care that they are trained and take an oath to perform.”
When pressed to name any abortion limit, she added, “I support leaving the decision between a woman and her doctor and leaving politicians entirely out of it.”
Arizona prohibits abortions after 15 weeks. The state also has a law that bans all elective abortions, but abortion activists filed a lawsuit and the courts blocked its enforcement. The case is before the Arizona Supreme Court.
