Journalist makes surprising claim about reported clause in Porro’s contract amid Spurs links
CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Manchester City do not have a buy-back clause in Pedro Porro’s contract, despite reports from some other publications.
Tottenham are thought to be locked in negotiations with Sporting Lisbon over a deal for Porro, with reports stating that talks are expected to continue over the coming days and weeks as the Portuguese club are demanding that the player’s £40m release clause be met (Guardian).
Over the last few days, some publications have indicated that Chelsea have also entered the race to sign the Spaniard (Mundo Deportivo) while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have also allegedly explored a deal for the right-back (Record).
It had previously been reported that Man City had inserted a buy-back clause of €20m (£16.9m) in Porro’s contract when they sold the 23-year-old to Sporting (MEN).
However, Jacobs has now said that no such buy-back clause exists and revealed that Pep Guardiola’s men are now regretting their decision to let the right-back leave, given how he has progressed in Portugal.
The journalist said on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel: “In hindsight, Manchester City may feel that they may feel they made a mistake here, and there is no buy-back at their end either, so it does look like they have to pay the release clause or nothing.
“What you can do is offer the monetary amount of the release clause or slightly above it and try to negotiate more preferable terms. If you trigger the clause you’re not just paying the €45m, you’re also giving Sporting the payment terms they want which tends to be a lump sum.”

This claim by Jacobs makes a lot of sense as Man City would have activated the buy-back clause if it existed. Even if Guardiola did not want Porro, the Premier League champions would have opted to activate the clause and sell him on for a profit, given how much the 23-year-old is now worth.
