Agent claims Spurs were ‘close’ to signing 23-year-old attacker in the summer
Italian agent Massimo Brambati has revealed that Tottenham came close to snapping up AS Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo back in the summer.
Zaniolo was heavily linked with a move to Spurs in the summer transfer window but the attacker ended up staying put at the Stadio Olimpico.
Gianluca Di Marzio explained to Wettfreunde last month that the only reason Antonio Conte’s men missed out on the 23-year-old is that they explored a part-exchange offer while Roma preferred a straight cash deal.
Zaniolo has certainly not set the world alight for the Giallorossi this season, with just one goal from 11 Serie A appearances this season (Transfermarkt).
The Italy international has 18 months left to run on his deal in Rome and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will reignite their interest in the player during the January window.
Over recent weeks, reports have suggested that both Napoli (TMW) and Arsenal (Radio Radio) are considering making offers for Zaniolo but Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that there is ‘nothing concrete’ at the moment to suggest that the winger is on his way out of Roma (CaughtOffside).
Brambati has now revealed that the silky left footer and his entourage even had a meeting with the Tottenham hierarchy during the summer to discuss a transfer.
When asked if Mourinho is the right coach for Zaniolo, the agent told TuttoMercatoWeb: “Not for me. Tottenham were close to signing Zaniolo in the last transfer market, there was a meeting in August where the player, together with his father, met with Tottenham managers to go there. Conte probably would have pulled something more out of him.”

I suspect Tottenham’s main concerns about Zaniolo would likely have to do with his fitness as there is no doubting his ability. If the North London club are confident that the 23-year-old’s injury woes are behind him, I can see them reigniting their interest in the winger over the coming days.
