Sonajhuri is a forested area located in the Vadodara district of Gujarat, in India. It is better known as the hometown of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, and home to Visva Bharati University, one of the seven universities in India affiliated with the University of Cambridge. Surajit Biswas, a baroda-based visual artist, has started a floating library here, under the open sky, inviting anyone to read, interact, and correlate with the environment. The library, called “Bhumi Kriya 2022”, is part of a project of the Hidden Artist Initiative, a nonprofit organization that acts as a bridge for artists who have passed out from two iconic fine arts institutions of the country – Santiniketan (the school Tagore founded) and Baroda. The forest area is spread over a huge area, but Biswas launched the project according to his individual capacity, installing seven wooden racks where books and reading material for the locals are kept.
