A QUICK-THINKING grandad has delivered his first grandchild – in the back of his car in a Tesco car park
A doting stepdad leapt into action when his stepson’s girlfriend went into labour in the back of his car – and helped deliver his first grandchild.
Quick-thinking Philip Metcalfe, 38, was driving his step-son Terence Sweeney, 21, and his girlfriend Morgan Broadley, 20, to the hospital after Morgan went into labour.
As he was driving, the couple realised that little Esmae was almost here and Philip quickly pulled into a Tesco Express car park – taking on the role of a midwife.
He delivered Esmae in the back of his car in the car park and even had to unwrap the umbilical cord from around her neck which he said ‘happened so fast.’
Philip said: “It just happened so fast.
“Anyone would have done the same .I knew I had to keep calm.
“It only took a couple of pushes and she was here.
“The cord was wrapped twice around her neck but once I’d got her untangled, she started breathing and had a little cry.”
After delivering Esmae, Philip drove the couple and their new arrival to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax, West Yorks,. where a team of midwives were waiting for them.
She weighed 7lb 4oz when she was born, and both her and Morgan are doing well and are at home.
Philip, who owns a pop-up coffee shop, described his first grandchild as ‘beautiful’.
He added: “Esmae is just so beautiful. I can’t stop cuddling her.”
Morgan was 10 days past her due date on December 6, when she started having labour pains.
Philip’s wife Jamie Metcalfe suggested that Morgan should have a bath – but the pains were getting stronger.
Jamie, a mum-of-three, thought ‘there’d be hours to go’ when Morgan first went into labour.
But she was actually only in labour for an hour and a half altogether.
She said: “I’ve had three myself and with it being her first, I thought there’d be hours to go.
“It was an hour and a half altogether. It’s the fastest labour I’ve known, especially with it being her first.
“Philip was so calm. I’m so proud of him.”
