UK weather: Met Office releases SEVEN snow and ice warnings for this weekend… and there’s more to come
THE Met Office has released seven snow and ice warnings for this weekend – and there’s more to come.
The wintry conditions are set to batter Brits all the way into next week – with snow even expected to fall in London in coming days.
The warnings come after Arctic conditions continued to freeze the nation today, with lows of -9C recorded in Benson, Oxfordshire, overnight.
The Met Office is now urging Brits to keep an eye on the forecasts, as the icy weather sets in.
Meteorologists have today issued yellow snow and ice weather warnings – three tomorrow and four on Sunday.
They cover much of the UK – including the majority of Scotland – and the west coast of the country.
An extra warning is in place from London to Brighton on Sunday.
The Met Office warned there may be road and rail chaos, and that icy surfaces could make for difficult driving – and walking.
They warned cold air would remain across much of the UK tomorrow.
Wintry showers are forecast to push into the north west, but brighter skies are expected elsewhere.
However, meterologists warned some freezing patches may linger during the day.
On Sunday rain could turn into “wintry participation”.
There is also likely to be “freezing fog” across the country, which will be slow to clear.
As a result, temperatures will struggle to climb above 0C in those areas.
However, places outside the fog and rain are likely to enjoy sunny spells.
But, overall the day is expected to be bitter, and multiple layers of clothing will be required outside.
A snow and ice warning is already in place for London, Brighton and Canterbury on Monday, too.
The warning says two to five centimeters of snow could fall quite widely, with up to 10cm in some places.
The UK forecaster said: “Snow may push in across parts of east and south-east England, leading to a risk of travel disruption especially on Monday morning.”
The fresh warnings come after Brits were warned power cuts could leave thousands without heating.
The National Grid said it is on standby to shore up power supplies this weekend as wind levels drop, according to the Daily Telegraph.
It’s understood that supplies are expected to be tight today and on Sunday as there are higher levels of demand due to cold weather and less windy conditions.
Meanwhile, the Met Office said thundersnow had blasted north east Scotland – a rare phenomenon where thunderstorms form and give rise to downpours of snow.
