Killer driver back in jail for causing second fatal crash

A killer driver has been locked up again for causing a second fatal crash which left a young carer dead.

Matthew Plimmer, 35, downed two pints and five shots of Sambuca before getting behind the wheel of his Audi Q7 and colliding head on with a Fiat Punto on January 19.

That car was being driven by 25-year-old care worker Jessica Drury, who died at the scene on Southwell Road in Oxton.

Plimmer was previously killing a teenage passenger in a similar crash back in 2006.

Nottingham Crown Court heard he immediately sought to cover his tracks after the recent crash, giving a false name to other people who stopped at the scene and saying his friend had been driving.

But detectives found his DNA on the driver’s airbag and the inside of the damaged windscreen on the same side.

Plimmer, from Mansfield, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence, causing death by driving whilst disqualified, and driving whilst disqualified.

He was jailed for nine years and must also serve an additional three years on licence when he is released.

Collision Investigator Sarah Butler said: ‘At the centre of this tragic case was a popular and much-loved young woman whose loss is felt every day by her family and friends.

‘She was a devoted care worker who dedicated her life to helping others and at the time of the collision was on her way home from supporting an elderly local couple.

‘Plimmer made a conscious decision to go drinking at a local pub that day. He chose to ignore his driving ban and he chose to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

‘He then chose to continue his lies as long as he could about what happened that night.

‘Jessica, on the other hand, had no choice in any of this.

‘This appalling tragedy was entirely Plimmer’s fault and I am pleased that he is now starting a very lengthy prison sentence.

‘I do hope that this sentence will act as a warning to others about the potential consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol.’

Plimmer was previously convicted of causing death by dangerous driving at Luton Crown Court. The offence was in 2006 and he was speeding without insurance or MOT.

He lost control and crashed, leaving his passenger fatally injured.
