Liverpool 3 Southampton 1: Darwin Nunez scores twice as Klopp’s side push towards top four while Jones loses first game
DARWIN NUNEZ claimed a double as Jurgen Klopp sat back and relaxed in the stand.
The Liverpool boss was given a belated one–game ban for his red mist rant during last month’s 1–0 win over Manchester City.
He had already paid a £30,000 fine but that was the extent of the damage as his side showed they are very much back in business.
This was their fourth successive win in all competitions – something they had not achieved after a turbulent start to the season.
And maybe with Klopp suspended from the touchline and chattering to the bench via a tiny microphone things might have gone south.
But Roberto Firmino celebrated an early opener in the week he aas left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad.
And while Che Adams equalised three minutes and six seconds later, Liverpool put the peddle to the metal.
Harvey Elliott especially, the 19 year old running the show in an electrifying first half.
He delivered a brilliant 27th minute chip from which Nunez headed the Reds into the lead.
Then Andy Robertson ended a superb four–man cruise through Southampton’s ranks for the Uruguayn to claim his seventh goal in 10 games and ninth since his £85M arrival from Benfica.
New Saints boss Nathan Jones will have been encouraged by his team’s gutsy showing.
Even 13 minutes from the end Adams was still plugging away – forcing Alisson into a fine stop.
But Klopp is resuming normal service at Anfield again.
And while his team didn’t exactly go radio ga-ga they were still very good viewing indeed.
