UK-Aga Khan Foundation New Partnership to Assist Afghans ‘Beyond’ Immediate Relief

The UK government inked a new agreement, a multi-sector program, with Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) to support the rebuilding of the Afghan communities, a move that helps the impoverished people of Afghanistan “beyond immediate humanitarian relief.”

According to a tweet on Monday, November 7, the AKF announced that it has entered into a partnership with the UK government to support Afghan households and communities after years of economic instability, conflict, and drought.

For many years, the AKF and the UK government have worked together in Afghanistan to improve the education of girls in the country’s outlying regions. This partnership will be expanded through a new agreement that will assist access to healthcare, as well as agriculture and livelihoods.

Around 10 million children’s ability to continue their education is in jeopardy as a result of sanctions and the freezing of aid, after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.

With the help of this new partnership and a grant of £11.2 million, the AKF will reach over 800,000 people in 9 provinces, including Badakhshan, Bamyan, Baghlan, Daikundi, Kunduz, Kabul, Parwan, Samangan, and Takhar.

Along with filling up the gaps in the provision of health and education services, AKF will also assist both on- and off-farm livelihoods.

Due to COVID-19 and the ongoing humanitarian situation, many children have missed more than two years of school. To make up for this, AKF said it will provide catch-up sessions for 15,000 teenage girls and 10,000 adolescent boys.

AKF added that the program will concentrate on immunizations and maternity and child health to address the most urgent gaps in a critically underfunded health system. Over 23,000 children and 35,000 mothers are planned to be served via mobile and remote immunization services.

Through this initiative and all of its others, AKF seeks to strengthen the resilience of Afghan people that are at risk, giving them a greater chance to respond to the crisis’s changing dynamics.

The AKF also stated that as part of its firm commitment to the Afghan people, it will keep fostering partnerships to deliver assistance that is efficient, long-lasting, and culturally appropriate.
