PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man who allegedly set a vehicle on fire was hospitalized after a shooting broke out with police in Southeast Portland on Monday morning, according to authorities.
The Portland Police Bureau and Portland Fire & Rescue responded to Southeast 83rd Avenue and Southeast Harrison Street at around 9 a.m.
A struggle reportedly broke out when officers confronted the suspect, leading police to fire at the man, according to PPB spokesperson Lt. Nathan Sheppard.
It’s unclear how many officers fired their weapons or how many rounds were fired.
Police said the man initially ran off but surrendered and was taken into custody. The man reportedly appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound.
The vehicle was fully engulfed before it burned itself out, according to officials.
The scene unfolded near Harrison Park School and the Portland Community College Southeast campus. Both schools were placed under lockdown but have since lifted those orders.
According to a release issued by PCC, the campus will remain closed throughout the day due to the disruption. The school says all scheduled on-campus classes and activities are canceled for the day as well.
PPB’s Homicide Unit is handling the investigation.
