California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged voters to pass a radical state constitutional amendment to expand late-term abortions during a pro-abortion rally Sunday in Long Beach.
CBS News Los Angeles reports Newsom joined other abortion activists at an election event supporting Proposition 1 on the ballot this week. The Democrat governor has been working aggressively with the abortion industry to expand the killing of unborn babies in California.
Newsom said women’s rights are “on the line” because the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. He urged voters to support Proposition 1 and “send a powerful message all across America that we have your back,” according to the report.
“It’s local government. It’s states like California that are on the front lines of rights all across this country,” Newsom said. “Do not take that for granted.”
California Secretary of State Shirley Weber also spoke, reminding voters to remain “vigilant” because “freedom is not free” and “justice demands constant attention,” CBS reports.
However, OB-GYNs and pro-life leaders have been speaking out against the state constitutional amendment, warning that it would allow unborn babies to be aborted for any reason up to birth.

Proposition 1 would end what few limits on abortion California has and enshrine into the state constitution a “right” to taxpayer-funded “late-term abortion up until the moment of birth, even if both mother and child are healthy,” California Catholic bishops said recently.
An official voter’s guide from the California Secretary of State also confirms the proposal would allow unrestricted abortions up to birth.
“California law already allows access to abortion and contraception,” attorney Heather Hacker states in the guide, according to CBS. “But unlike state law, which limits late-term abortions unless medically necessary, Proposition 1 has no limit on late-term abortions.”
A Rasmussen poll in August found only 13 percent of California voters think abortions should be legal up to birth.
But the lawmakers who championed the amendment have not been clear about exactly what it would do, and they repeatedly have ignored questions about late-term abortions, NPR reported in October.
Last week, Catholic bishops criticized Newsom and state lawmakers for making the killing of unborn babies a top priority while ignoring families’ true needs.
“Our state budget allocated $20 million to provide for travel, missed wages, child care and even doula care for women from other states seeking abortions but Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed the very same care for low-income California residents who maintain their pregnancies,” the bishops wrote. “There is no equity or even a push for parity in medical coverage for pregnant women and mothers.”
If it passes, pro-life leaders say California will become like North Korea and China where late-term abortions are legal even when the mother’s health is not in danger and the baby is viable and healthy.
“Proposition 1 is an extreme and costly proposal that does nothing to advance women’s health,” the California Family Council explains on its website. “Instead, it destroys precious human lives and wreaks havoc on families. It also punishes taxpayers and eliminates all limits on late-term abortions in defiance of what most voters want.”
Proposition 1 would add the following language to the California Constitution: “The state shall not deny or interfere with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.”
California has the largest number of abortion facilities in the country at 168; New York is second with 89, according to a new ANSIRH study. A new law slated to go into effect next year will force all public colleges and universities to provide abortions on campus.
State abortion facilities reported 132,680 abortions in 2017, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
