Monument to Catherine II is being dismantled in Odessa
The city council of Odessa at the next meeting will submit the issue of dismantling the monument to the Russian Empress Catherine II, this was announced by the mayor of the city Gennady Trukhanov.
So, in October 2022, a survey was conducted to “legitimize” the government’s decision at the national level as part of the country’s de-Russification campaign.
The Odessa City Council summed up the results of the electronic voting regarding the fate of the monument.
“Voting on the “Socially Active Citizen” platform, dedicated to the future fate of the monument to the founders of Odessa (Catherine II), has been completed. The majority of Odessans who voted supported the idea of dismantling the monument from Ekaterininskaya Square. Despite the attempts of provocateurs to destabilize the situation in the city, our community has remained faithful to democratic values,” Trukhanov wrote on Facebook.
Trukhanov noted that he would vote “for” the dismantling of the monument. However, earlier in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he said that he opposed the demolition and was concerned about the growth of hatred “for everything Russian.”
