Football pundit Jamie Carragher picked up on a small detail during Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League clash with Marseille involving Ivan Perisic.
Spurs travelled to France for the all-important final group game in this year’s Champions League needing a point to secure qualification for the knockout stages.
With Tottenham behind at half time, it was looking like the North London side would drop out of the competition altogether. Spurs managed to fight back in the second half though and pulled a goal back on 54 minutes thanks to a Clement Lenglet header.
That would have been enough to see Spurs through in second place in the group, but thankfully, a last-gasp goal from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg sealed all three points and saw the Lilywhites finish as group winners. The result means Spurs face a more favourable draw in the next round.
When the score was level at 1-1 though, veteran Croatian star Ivan Perisic made a crucial block as Alexis Sanchez shot from close range, stopping an almost certain goal. Perisic was clearly happy with his work, celebrating passionately as the ball went out of play.
Appearing on CBS Sports on Paramount+ (01/11/22 at 10:15 pm), Jamie Carragher spotted Perisic’s celebration, and commented on the importance of the fixture.
He said: “This was from Alexis Sanchez. You think it was written in the stars for him being an ex-Arsenal man to get the goal.”
On Perisic’s important block, Carragher said: “He shouldn’t really be there. He does brilliant to go on the line and that stops the shot. He actually celebrates. He knows how important that block is. It was going in the top corner.
“This is why this competition is the best. We only see that type of situation in the knockout stage. But we go to the final game of the group stage and it felt like we were watching a game from the last-16 or the quarter-finals.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Ivan Perisic was outstanding in the second half against Marseille, not only assisting Lenglet for the equaliser, but putting his body on the line to ensure Spurs got the result they needed. It’s crazy to think we got this player for nothing in the summer, but we’re not complaining.
