Adam Silver disappointed Kyrie Irving didn't apologize

“Kyrie Irving made a reckless decision to post a link to a film containing deeply offensive antisemitic material,” Adam Silver said in a statement. “While we appreciate the fact that he agreed to work with the Brooklyn Nets and the Anti-Defamation League to combat antisemitism and other forms of discrimination, I am disappointed that he has not offered an unqualified apology and more specifically denounced the vile and harmful content contained in the film he chose to publicize. I will be meeting with Kyrie in person in the next week to discuss this situation.”

What’s the buzz on Twitter?

Melissa Rohlin @melissarohlin
The problem now is even if Kyrie is forced into issuing an apology after meeting with Silver, it’ll be empty. He doesn’t want to apologize. He has made that very clear. As he said, he didn’t make the film. (He only promoted it.) – 12:47 PM
Sam Quinn @SamQuinnCBS
I pretty nakedly advocated for the Lakers to trade for Kyrie Irving this offseason. I’m ashamed of that. At this point, if I were running an NBA team, I would simply refuse to employ him, regardless of contract or basketball implications. – 12:46 PM

So Kyrie doubled down. Can’t get much more clear than that.
He had time to “simmer down” or whatever, time to think through his actions and time to speak to others in order to learn.
He clearly did none of that. He wouldn’t even say he is not anti-Semitic. – 12:26 PM

Don’t give too much credence to public statements in legal disputes. Kyrie, Primo, everyone is trying to manipulate the media to gain support. My advise is reserve judgement until after an independent investigation has published results. – 12:23 PM
Nick Friedell @NickFriedell
Kyrie just spoke for over six minutes. He said he took responsibility for his posts — but there was no formal apology like many around the league were hoping to hear. The press conference was cut short by a Nets PR staffer. – 12:18 PM

Some readers have asked me to compare Irving’s situation to Bullock’s. First, Bullock’s five-word comment was vague and nowhere near as incendiary as promoting an anti-Semitic movie. Second, Bullock/Mavs immediately addressed it, whereas Irving defiantly doubled-down. – 11:54 AM

More on this storyline

The popular fixture who sits (and stands) behind the basket at Barclays Center, from where he tries to hex opposing foul shooters, is sticking by a Nets team that has invited controversy at every turn. The concern dearest to Whammy, though, surrounds Kyrie Irving, who last week used his social media to plug a movie that includes antisemitic tropes. Whammy, as we will call him, is Jewish, and said he has written Irving a letter, which will be sent to the Nets. “Hopefully when he reads my letter, he should understand how he should act,” Whammy said over the phone Wednesday. -via New York Post / November 3, 2022
Whammy speaks fondly of Jarrett Allen, who was sent to Cleveland in the failed three-way trade that briefly brought James Harden to Brooklyn. Years ago, Whammy introduced himself to the young big man. “I said, ‘Do you have grandparents?’ He said, ‘No, but now I do,’” said Whammy, a regular attendee at Nets games since they were based in New Jersey in the 1990s. “Isn’t that beautiful?” Whammy said he taught Allen to shoot foul shots, and shaky free-throw shooter Nic Claxton will be his next project. Caris LeVert, also part of that trade with the Cavaliers, was a hugger. “I’m a little depressed that I don’t get the reaction from this team,” said Whammy, who was close enough with Jason Kidd that he attended his 2018 induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. “But in time they will.” -via New York Post / November 3, 2022
Kyrie Irving’s trade value appears to be at an all-time low. ESPN’s Zach Lowe said on his The Lowe Post podcast on Wednesday (around the 25-minute mark) that Irving is considered “radioactive” around the NBA: “I talked to a lot of people around the league over the weekend, and the sense I get right now is he’s radioactive. Even if you drop the price to nothing, the baggage is just too much. And you want to talk about how the Lakers are the most desperate team in the league. All right, the Lakers also play in a gigantic cosmopolitan city. All of the residents are following this story. I just don’t know what else they’re supposed to do except try to salvage and you’re telling me it’s unsalvageable.” -via Bleacher Report / November 3, 2022
