Darrell Brooks guilty of killing 6 and injuring 62 with SUV at Christmas parade
A jury has found Darrell Brooks, the man accused of killing six people and injuring 62 when he drove into a Christmas parade, guilty of intentional homicide.
In November 2021, Brooks drove an SUV going about 40 mph into a parade route in the town of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Witnesses reported that he drove in a zig-zag pattern, intentionally hitting as many people as possible.
Brooks was charged with six counts of intentional homicide, 61 counts of reckless endangerment, and six counts of hit and run causing death. Brooks pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During the trial, Brooks waived his right to an attorney and chose to represent himself. His erratic courtroom behavior, including refusing to respond to the name ‘Darrell Brooks,’ frequently disrupted the court proceedings.
Judge Jennifer Dorow responded by frequently sending Brooks to a separate courtroom, where he could watch the trial on video and respond when questioned.
In the separate room, Brooks continued his disruptive behavior, including taking his clothes off and building a box fort.
But on Wednesday, Brooks calmly held his head down, refusing to make eye contact with anyone as Dorow read out the guilty of verdicts.
