I’m midsize – my ‘shoelace’ hack makes dresses look so much more flattering instantly
A FASHION influencer has tried a TikTok hack to cinch the waist of her baggy dress without the hassle of bringing it to a seamstress.
Midsize content creator Dani Massis shared a TikTok video in which she used two common household items to superficially alter one of her dresses, and the results were stunning.
“So I have this super cute silk dress that I wanted to wear for my birthday, but the area of the waist is just a little too big,” Dani first explained.
She held up a shiny rust-colored polyester slip dress from Amazon. The silhouette on its own looked boxy.
“I’m gonna try one of those TikTok hacks where they take in the waist and make it super fitted. So let’s see how it goes,” she said.
Laying her dress on a bed, Dani said: “The first step is to turn it inside out so that you can see the seams on both the sides.”
Pointing out the inner side seams, she said the hack was to first attach safety pins to both sides. At the general waist area, she hooked and closed a safety pin around each side seam.
“Now I’m gonna add the shoelace,” she said, adding: “I actually put the dress on inside out so I could actually see how tight I wanted it.”
Wearing the dress inside out, she showed how the fabric bunched around her waist without the hack.
Then Dani turned to the back to show that she laced a shoelace through both safety pins. She held the ends of the shoelace in both hands.

“I’m just gonna tighten it and tie it in the back,” she said.
From the front, as Dani pulled at the shoelace from both ends, it instantly tightened the fabric around her stomach.
“Oooh okay, she’s snatched!” Dani said excitedly.
After tying the shoelace, she put the dress on right-side out to hide the shoelace underneath.
“This literally fits so much better,” Dani said, showing how the fabric perfectly cinched her waist and draped over her curves.
“I can probably tighten it even a little bit more, but it looks way better than it did originally,” she explained.
She wrote in the comments that because she didn’t tie the shoelace super snuggly, she wasn’t scared of tearing the fabric.
Happy with the results, Dani said: “If you haven’t tried this hack, go do it. It literally is a gamechanger.”
Other people were also happily surprised by the cheap and effective hack.
“AYO thank u. This just saved me from having to go thru the whole process of sewing my dress,” one person wrote.
Another person found the hack genius and humorous. “I love that our generation hates returning things so much that we invent stuff like this instead,” they wrote.
