Spendolini-Sirieix claims prestigious European award silver

European and Commonwealth champion diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix has been awarded silver at the European Olympic Committees’ (EOC) Piotr Nurowski Prize awards for the Best European Young Athlete.

The 18-year-old Briton was among five finalists for the eleventh edition of the awards, with Italian European Youth Olympic Festival gold medal-winning swimmer Filippo Bertoni another contender.

Spendolini-Sirieix’s achievements at Roma 2022 and Birmingham 2022 helped her claim second place, behind Serbian high jumper Angelina Topić, after votes were cast by European Olympic Committee members at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia, Greece.

The Piotr Nurowski Prize celebrates the achievements of young athletes and aims to inspire the next generation to embrace the values of Olympism.

“I am so honoured,” said Spendolini-Sirieix. “The blood, sweat and tears that have come from training make all these achievements worth it and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to do the sport I love every day.”

Spendolini-Sirieix, who turned 18 last month, followed up individual and synchronised 10m Commonwealth Games titles for England with two further golds medals at the LEN European Championships in Rome for Britain.

The 10m diver also claimed bronze in the Team Event at the Budapest 2022 senior World Championships in June.

Spendolini-Sirieix awarded 8000 euros to support her in the next leg of her journey towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Piotr Nurowski Prize was established by the European Olympic Committee (EOC) in 2011 in honour of the late former tennis player and Polish Olympic Committee president.
