UN: Nord Stream emergency will cause upheaval in energy markets
China’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Gen Shuang, said the emergency at Nord Stream will cause upheaval on energy markets.
At a meeting of the UN Security Council Geng Shuang, China’s deputy envoy to the United Nations, said China was ready to work with all parties to ensure the safety of cross-border infrastructure after the breakdown of Nord Streams, which will cause upheavals in energy markets and increase energy prices.
“We are seriously concerned about the recent multiple leaks at the Nord Streams, accompanied by severe underwater explosions. “The Nord Streams are the main artery of energy transportation in Europe, supplying vital gas to 23 European countries,” said Geng Shuang, quoted on the website of China’s mission to the UN.
The physical collapse of the pipelines has exacerbated the energy shortages in Europe, he said, adding, “Consumers around the world, including in developing countries, are likely to suffer from the resulting disruption of energy markets and rising energy prices.
Geng Shuang pointed out that the leaks were continuing and were affecting shipping lanes and the environment.
“We have noticed that the information available so far indicates that the leaks that have occurred this time are not accidental, but most likely the result of a deliberate sabotage. If true, this would be an attack on transnational civilian facilities and underwater pipelines in violation of international law. We have also pointed out that all stakeholders agree on the need for an objective, impartial and professional investigation into the leaks,” he added.
Geng Shuang noted that China is “ready to work with all parties to ensure cross-border infrastructure security”.
