US to Provide Afghanistan with $327 Million in Humanitarian Assistance
The US has approved a new humanitarian aid program of $327 million for Afghanistan to fund emergency support and health services.
The latest US aid of 327 million dollars, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, is intended to support humanitarian help to the people of Afghanistan, he stated in a series of tweets on Friday night.
“We remain committed to the Afghan people,” US Secretary Blinken wrote on his Twitter handle.
The US foreign minister continued by saying that the US was providing new aid to Afghanistan in response to requests for assistance from Afghanistan’s contiguous neighbors.
The American official stated that the additional $327 million in humanitarian aid for Afghanistan goes to Afghans living outside of their country as well, through aid agencies.
The funding, according to Blinken comprises approximately $119 million from the US Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and nearly $208 million from the US Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.
Internally displaced people and returnees will get emergency financial aid, housing, healthcare, reintegration support, safety, life-saving maternal and reproductive health services, and services for preventing and responding to gender-based violence.
The donation will also provide multidimensional aid to Afghans living in neighboring countries, such as providing services for COVID-19 screening and immunization, as well as health and nutrition programs for Afghan refugees and host communities in Pakistan.
The “Afghan Fund” was recently established in Geneva, Switzerland to maintain and manage the 3.5 billion dollars foreign reserve of the Central Bank of Afghanistan, according to a recent announcement from the US Departments of State and Treasury.
According to a joint statement from the said US departments, the purpose of establishing this fund was to use resources for the benefit of the Afghan people while preventing the Taliban and other extremist organizations from having access to them.
