Herbert to be sworn in as next police chief in Brentwood

BRENTWOOD – Captain Tim Herbert, a longtime Brentwood police officer, will be the city’s new police chief, replacing Tom Hansen, who is retiring next week.

Herbert was promoted after an internal recruitment and interviews by Brentwood city leaders and City Manager Tim Ogden. He will become chief on Sept. 28, while Hansen will hang up his badge on Sept. 30.

A Brentwood resident, Herbert has 31 years of law enforcement experience. In December of last year he was tapped to serve as acting captain for a month while Hansen temporarily worked as assistant city manager when staffing was low. Captain Doug Silva also served as acting chief the month prior.

“I thought what a great opportunity for the captains to get a little taste of the seat,” Hansen said at the time. “This has been a great succession planning exercise.”

Brentwood Police Captain Tim Herbert will be sworn in as the city’s new police chief on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022.

Hansen has worked for the Brentwood Police Department since 2002, having served as Support Services Captain since 2019, as well as in a variety of leadership positions as lieutenant and sergeant overseeing budgeting, training, recruiting, internal affairs, and the patrol division since 2010. He has a master of science degree in criminal justice, and a bachelor of science degree in organizational behavior, and is a member of the California Police Chief Association and completed POST management and development courses.

As the next police chief, Herbert will also serve as a member of the Brentwoodexecutive team reporting to Ogden and participating in citywide management efforts with them.

“I am excited at the opportunity to lead the men and women of the Brentwood Police Department and serve the citizens of Brentwood,” Herbert said. “I’m eager to get started on this exciting journey as the next police chief.”

The city manager praised Herbert for his service.

“He will continue to bring integrity and passion to the city and will serve all of the community well,” Ogden said.

Chief since 2017, Hansen will retire after 35 years in law enforcement, including 27 years in Brentwood.

The city will host the final log-off and swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Hansen will make his final log-off and Herbert will be sworn in as new chief. The ceremony will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m at the Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak St.
