'My heart is already broken.'
Chris Kaba’s mother has renewed her call for ‘justice’ after watching the bodycam footage of his fatal shooting.
The unarmed black man was killed with a single bullet by a Metropolitan Police officer after a car chase in Streatham Hill, south London, earlier this month.
His Audi was hemmed in by two police vehicles in a narrow residential street, and one round was fired from a police weapon.
The firearms officer involved in the killing of the 24-year-old was suspended and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is now investigating.
Yesterday, his family were shown the bodycam footage of the shooting during a meeting with the Met Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, and IOPC director general Michael Lockwood.
Mr Kaba’s mother, Helen Nkama, told Sky News afterwards: ‘My heart is already broken.
‘What I want is justice to be done, and the truth. That’s what I want for Chris. I need the truth.’
This comes after repeated calls from Mr Kaba’s cousin, Jefferson Bosela, for the family to be shown bodycam and aerial footage of the incident, so they can have ‘a clear understanding of what happened’.
A statement issued on behalf of them said: ‘Today, the family of Chris Kaba had private meetings with the new Met Police Service commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and the director general of the IOPC, Michael Lockwood.
‘The family will not be making any further comment at this time.’
The private meeting between the family and police lasted around 25 minutes.
Investigators from the IOPC will consider whether race was a factor in the fatal shooting after his family
In a statement, the IOPC said it would ‘explore all of the circumstances’ surrounding the death of the dad-to-be, including whether ‘race influenced any actions taken by the police’.
An inquest into Mr Kaba’s death will be opened on October 4.
