Smoke billows into the sky after massive fire breaks out in Oldham
A huge fire has broken out in Greater Manchester.
The blaze in Oldham left people from far around seeing plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.
The Machester Evening News reported that even residents in Manchester city centre said they could see the black fumes.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: ‘We are currently responding to an incident at a commercial premises on Higginshaw Lane, in the Royton area of Oldham.
‘We ask that residents keep the area clear and shut their doors and windows as there is a lot of smoke, and so we can continue to work quickly.’
The Oldham Times suggested the fire was at a scrap yard near Higginshaw Lane.
Its reporter wrote: ‘I can see at least four fire engines.
‘I’ve overheard a firefighter who said an aerial appliance might be needed too.’
By 12.15pm the reporter suggested fire fighters were ‘on top’ of the blaze and there was significantly less smoke than earlier.
Bus company First Manchester tweeted: ‘Due to a fire on Shaw Road, services are diverting via Oldham Road, Shaw Road right on Salmon Fields to normal route. This is in both directions.’
Locals have taken to social media to say the fire is ‘getting worse’.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown.
