Rumors are swirling that The Phantom of the Opera is closing on Broadway.
The beloved musical is the longest-running Broadway show of all time after nearly 35 years and 13,733 performances so far. The second longest-running show is currently Chicago, which has been on Broadway for 25 years and is still open.
The news was first revealed by The New York Post and the paper’s sources say the final performance will be December 31, though a rep for the show denied that the musical is closing.

Sources said the show “has struggled to recover since it reopened in October 2021 following the pandemic closure, and is losing some $1 million a month.”
Shortly after the news was announced, Time Out New York also confirmed the closing notice via their sources.
The Phantom of the Opera, which features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, won seven Tony Awards back in 1988, including Best Musical.
