Personally, I don’t fully understand it

However I do know people who have been far more affected by Liz’s death than they were expecting.

It’s almost as though the Queen had come to represent the idea of a Britain that now seems lost. That, along with the fact that many people over the last couple of years haven’t been able to grieve publicly for loved ones in a normal way, seems to have led to an outpouring of emotion.

We have, depending on your viewpoint, either been given permission to mourn or have been instructed to mourn.

If you feel more like the former this may be a healthy and helpful thing to offer, if it’s the latter it definitely won’t!

I said at the beginning that she had been around for all of most peoples lives, so it did cause many, me included, to recall losses in their own life. My mother was a month older though died nearly 30 years ago. A hard life and vulnerable genes. That loss always stays with you and actually I think that is perfectly normal and human. I’m not sure what counselling would bring but it does seem there’s a lot of counselling about. I’m a bit sceptical because I know a couple of people who do the job in different settings and I wouldn’t like to think anybody I know was leaning on them.

To be honest, the endless repetition of stuff, the examination of the most inconsequential (eg her love of dogs and where her corgies are going) and a deal of the flummery and sycophancy is getting on my wick. Our parks and allotments company (hived off out of public ownership) has cancelled the annual show due for Sunday as they state they think it would be ‘too celebratory’ and therefore ‘not appropriate’: Isn’t that just balderdash?
