‘I was told this very clearly’ – Alasdair Gold makes positive Djed Spence claim 

Alasdair Gold has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur would have not signed Djed Spence for any other manager apart from Antonio Conte. 

Tottenham paid £20m including add-ons to sign Spence from Middlesbrough this summer on the back of the youngster’s breakthrough season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Spurs fans would have been excited by the 22-year-old’s arrival and hoped he could provide more of an attacking threat from right wing-back, which was missing at times last season.

However, Emerson Royal has started all of Tottenham’s seven games in all competitions so far, with Spence only making a solitary appearance from the bench.

Earlier this month, Conte praised the England Under-21 international for his attitude in training since arriving at the club but he admitted that the youngster needs time to adapt to the demands of top-flight football (Football.London).

Gold has now eased Spurs fans’ fears regarding Spence, insisting that the former Boro man ‘ticks every box’ that Conte wants in a wing-back.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “Spence is one who the club feel will fit both Conte and the club. And Conte’s made it very clear that the club wanted Djed Spence.

“I was told this very clearly that Spence wasn’t a player that Spurs would have bought under any other manager. He just ticks every box Conte wants in a wing-back.”

Conte has been hesitant to even throw the likes of Richarlison, Bissouma and Lenglet straight in as they are still getting used to the system.

So, it is not surprising that he is being extremely patient with Spence, given that the 22-year-old has no experience of top-flight football.

I suspect we will only start to see the youngster get regular minutes in the second half of the campaign.
