90 min have claimed that Nicolo Zaniolo’s contract talks with AS Roma have hit a roadblock following Tottenham’s failed pursuit of the winger during the summer transfer window.
Corriere dello Sport (22/08/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) reported last month that Tottenham came ‘very close’ to snapping up Zaniolo during the summer.
The report claimed that Roma director Tiago Pinto was keen on ‘closing the deal’ with the Premier League side but the Friedkin family, who own the Serie A club, allegedly pulled the plug on the transfer at the last minute.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will go back in for the 23-year-old in January but CalcioMercatoWeb reported last week that their North London rivals, Arsenal, could enter the race for the Italy international.
The report explained that Roma would be receptive to a part-exchange offer from the Gunners involving Gabriel Magalhaes since Jose Mourinho is keen on bolstering his options at centre-back.
If 90 min’s latest update is to be believed, Zaniolo’s chances of exiting the Stadio Olimpico might have been boosted by the latest contract developments.
The report claims that the Giallorossi are not willing to offer the winger the ‘high pay rise’ that he is demanding. Zaniolo’s current deal at the Italian capital runs out in the summer of 2024 (Transfermakrt).
Spurs Web Opinion
If Zaniolo refuses to sign a new deal, it would be in Roma’s best interest to sell him in January in order to get as big a fee as possible for the 23-year-old.
It is clear that both Conte and Paratici are fans of the winger, and so, I believe Tottenham will try again to sign the Roma star if he becomes available in January.
