San Leandro: Three shot, two critically, during burglary, high-speed chase

SAN LEANDRO — Two men were injured in a shooting during an attempted burglary Sunday at a marijuana-cultivation site, with police arresting one of several suspects who led officers on a high-speed chase into Oakland, authorities said.

In a statement, police said officers responded around 4:20 a.m. to a call about a burglary in progress in the 2000 block of Adams Avenue in the north end of the city’s Davis Tract.

Officers arrived minutes later and learned burglary suspects were exchanging gunfire with people tending a marijuana-cultivation site.

Paramedics and Alameda County Fire Department firefighters also responded to a medical-emergency call at the Adams location, providing care for a security guard who suffered a gunshot wound, and was later listed in stable condition at a hospital, and a site manager who suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was later listed in critical condition at a hospital.

Officers at the scene soon found a burglary suspect suffering from a gunshot wound. That suspect was later hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

As other arriving officers saw a U-Haul van fleeing the scene, they began a high-speed pursuit into Oakland after it failed to yield to officers. At one point, suspects got out of the van and got into a newer-model silver Jeep.

Moments later, officers managed to detain a suspect, who was not injured in the earlier gunfire exchange, on foot and recovered the U-Haul van as evidence, while other officers followed the jeep until it stopped near 31st Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way in West Oakland, about 20 minutes and nearly 10 miles from where the chase began.

At that point, two other suspects fled the Jeep and eluded capture. Officers recovered the Jeep at that scene. Investigators will work with city staff to determine the marijuana-cultivation site’s legal status, police said.

The incident marks the city’s second injury shooting within a week, after last Wednesday’s midday shooting and robbery of an armed security guard at the Kaiser Medical Center campus. A day later, that guard succumbed of his wounds, and the resulting homicide remains under investigation.
