Queen’s beloved corgis to be cared for by Prince Andrew

The Duke of York has been left to care for the Queen’s corgis following her death.

Candy, Muick and Sandy will soon move to the home of Prince Andrew.

The trio were seen as ‘family’ by the late monarch, who had a deep affection for the breed.

However Candy is in fact a dorgi – part dachshund – rather than full corgi.

Rather than roam the 775 rooms of Buckingham Palace or the 1,000 rooms in Windsor Castle, the three distinguished dogs will now have the run of just 30 rooms in Prince Andrew’s Royal Lodge in Windsor.

‘As for Andrew, there is no new title and apparently no way back into the fold. Instead he just gets the dogs.

‘He’s been spending most of it horse riding but will now be able to get out for walks with the dogs too.’

Candy, Muick and Sandy provided great joy for the Queen in recent years, especially during lockdown.

Angela Kelly, a former aide to the late monarch, told Hello magazine how the trio ‘always brought a smile to everyone’s faces’.

Candy and Muick had been gifts from Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie when Prince Philip was taken to hospital.

Last June they gifted another corgi, Sandy, to keep the Queen company.

Her Majesty’s love for her corgis is well known and the dogs were often seen by her side at her royal residences throughout her life.

The Queen had over 30 corgis and preferred the breed because of their ‘energy and untamed spirit’.

Insiders said the dogs have their own base in the Palace, referred to as ‘the corgi room’ where they slept in elevated baskets to avoid the draft.

Her love for corgis was solidified after she was given her first, Susan, for her 18th birthday by her parents in 1944.

A new breed of dog, known as the ‘dorgi’, was introduced when the late monarch’s corgi Tiny was mated with a dachshund ‘sausage dog’ called Pipkin belonging to Princess Margaret.

The Queen’s corgis even demonstrated some acting chops when they starred alongside their owner in a James Bond special.

Monty, Willow and another corgi Holly, greeted the secret agent, played by Daniel Craig, as he arrived at the Palace to accept a mission from the Queen.

The dogs ran down the stairs, performed tummy rolls and then stood as a helicopter took off for the Olympic stadium ahead of the opening of the 2012 Games.
