The Premier League have confirmed that there will be no games played in the upcoming match round as a mark of respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who sadly passed away at the age of 96 yesterday.
The UK Government released a statement earlier today stating that there is no obligation to cancel any sports events, but the Premier League have gone ahead to postpone the fixtures for the seventh game week.
In a statement released few minutes ago, Chief Executive Richard Masters said:
“We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.”
“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.
“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation, but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”
With the announcement, United’s upcoming trip to Crystal Palace has been postponed while further updates will be provided on future fixtures during the period of mourning.
United’s Europa League group stage opener against Real Sociedad went ahead last night with black armbands and a minute of silence before the game.
The Red Devils are on course to play back-to-back European matches with a trip to Sheriff on Thursday. Whether the game will go as planned remains to be seen.
