How to sign up for California power Flex Alerts and report your electricity conservation effort
The California Independent System Operator, which manages the flow of electricity on major transmission lines across the state, issues Flex Alerts urging power conservation when electricity demand may exceed supply.
If consumption doesn’t drop, the ISO can order PG&E and other utilities to start rolling blackouts to reduce use and prevent widespread failures of the electric grid across the West.
Flex Alerts are designed to reduce power demand, particularly during the peak period of 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., when hot weather conditions prompt heavy use of air conditions or other power-hungry appliances.
You can sign up for free Flex Alert email or SMS alerts and also let the ISO know that you will conserve power during a current heat wave or other event prompting the alerts.
The FlexAlert.org website also has information about the current state of electricity supply and demand, and tips on what to do including:
Prior to the Flex Alert period:
- Use major appliances if needed. Ovens and washing machines would be examples.
- Pre-cool your home with your air conditioner.
- Draw the shades on windows to reduce heat from the sun.
- Charge phones and other devices. Charge electric cars overnight.
During the Flex Alert period:
- Turn your air conditioner up to at least 78 degrees if health permits.
- Unplug any unused devices and turn off power strips. The Department of Energy estimates that a typical family spends $100 a year powering devices in standby mode.
- Use fans for cooling.
- Turn off all lights that aren’t needed.
- Avoid using major appliances such as ovens, washers and dryers.
