Storms sweep through DC area making for wet commute
D.C.-area commuters should brace for a wet, stormy drive home on Tuesday night.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Storms coming through between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
- Gusty winds and potentially small hail.
- A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m. in King George, Virginia.
In addition to areas in Virginia, a storm is also hovering over Southern Maryland, Storm Team4 meteorologist Mike Stinneford said. Rain is heading toward Waldorf and La Plata, as well.
The storms are bringing heavy rain, so expect delays if you’re driving.
The showers and storms will last several hours, and then it will become less muggy as a cold front arrives.
Meanwhile, isolated wind damage is possible, but most of the rain will end by 9 or 10 p.m., Storm Team4 meteorologist Amelia Draper said. Low temperatures will then fall into the 60s.
Across the storm-swept areas, power lines and downed trees have been reported in Culpeper, Frederick and Fairfax counties in Virginia; and in Frederick County, Maryland.
Wednesday is expected to be much less humid with a northwest breeze in the afternoon. The dry pattern, with lower temperatures, is expected to last through the weekend.
Things are expected to cool off later in the week, with high temperatures on Thursday and Friday expected to reach the 80s with low humidity.
