Walmart Invites Canadian Sellers to Join Its US Marketplace

Calling it a chance to expand in the U.S., Walmart is hoping to recruit sellers based in Canada to join its American marketplace.

The retail giant made the offer in a news release Tuesday (Aug. 30) while inviting entrepreneurs and eCommerce sellers to sign up for its Virtual Global Seller Summit - Canada on Sept. 8, featuring practical sessions run by Walmart executives and cross-border payments provider Payoneer.

“Attendees will learn how they can take advantage of simplified onboarding, streamlined fulfillment, targeted promotions, integrated financial services and other support to help them rapidly scale and grow in the U.S. and Canada,” the release said.

Walmart said its desire to attract Canadian companies expands on its longtime engagement with retailing and eCommerce in Canada, and comes as local businesses, especially smaller ones, are hoping to capitalize on the Canada-United States-Mexico free trade agreement (CUSMA).

Darren Carithers, senior vice president of marketplace development for Walmart International, said that the company is focused on expanding its U.S. and Canada marketplaces and making serious investments in new tools and services for sellers.

“Building eCommerce marketplaces that both customers and sellers trust has been a priority for Walmart for years,” Carithers said. “Whether you are an experienced Walmart seller or new to the Walmart family, we want to help you succeed on our U.S. and Canadian marketplaces.”

The news comes two months after Walmart invited retailers in the U.K. to join its online marketplace — which gets 120 million monthly visitors — to have another place to earn eCommerce revenue.

Earlier this summer, Walmart Canada expanded its partnership with Instacart with the launch of Walmart Now, a virtual, delivery-only convenience store designed to bring products to customers’ doors within 30 minutes. The two companies first teamed up in 2018 in a partnership that includes more than 250 Walmart Canada stores.
