Quebec needs immigrants to address demographic and economic challenges, and this is something that should be discussed in the election campaign.
It is high time for our politicians and thought leaders to have a frank discussion with Quebecers about immigration. During the 2018 election campaign the Coalition Avenir Québec promised to reduce annual immigration by 20 per cent, from about 50,000 to 40,000. The CAQ’s leader, François Legault, maintained that at the higher level it was difficult for francophones to get immigrants to adopt the French language.
