HOLMEY, TAYLOR, SCHMIDT AND NOJA CLINCH SEMIFINAL SPOTS

The third playing day of the Big Green Egg Swedish Match Play Championship saw three nine-hole rounds of matchplay take place at the Edenhof Course in GolfUppsala, resulting in four players clinching their spot in Saturday’s semifinals.

After two days of a stroke-play qualifier, the main knockout competition started today with the round of 32 in the morning, the last 16 in the afternoon, and the quarterfinals in the evening.

Round of 32

The morning matches saw some dramatic action as it was once again proven that matchplay is unpredictable and cannot be judged by qualifying results.

Sweden’s Zandra Nilsson clinched the final spot in the main competition with a birdie on the third additional hole in yesterday’s playoff, and it was her who knocked out the winner and compatriot Isabella Deilert this morning.

The two other players who secured their spots through the playoff also showed their strength in this format as Denmark’s Fie Olsen and Norway’s Tina Mazarino beat Sweden’s Lisa Pettersson and Australia’s Kristalle Blum, respectively.

A Swedish duel saw Ellinor Sudow and My Leander battling it out to the seventh additional hole, with Sudow finally making the winning putt on the 16th hole.

Nine holes were not enough for one more Swedish duo as Ellen Hutchinson-kay needed an extra hole to win against Corinne Viden.

The last 16

Eight matches went underway after midday and Germany’s Patricia Isabel Schmidt needed the lowest number of holes to secure her spot in the quarterfinals, having won 4&2 over Sweden’s Sandra Kagstrom.

Ellinor Sudow was the only other player requiring less than nine holes to end up victorious as she saw off Tina Mazarino with the final score of 3&1.

Four matches finished on the ninth and two on the tenth hole as New Zealand’s Momoka Kobori won over Finland’s Niina Liias on the additional hole while Germany’s Chiara Noja beat Sweden’s Isabell Ekstrom on the tenth as well.

Quarterfinals

The evening at GolfUppsala saw four even matches with Patricia Isabel Schmidt again being the earliest winner as she saw off Ellen Hutchinson-kay on the eighth hole.

England’s Amy Taylor secured her semifinal spot with a 1UP win over Scotland’s Hannah McCook. The same result went for Chiara Noja over Ellinor Sudow.

An exciting battle to finish the day was on offer by two 2022 LETAS champions – Momoka Kobori and amateur Lauren Holmey from the Netherlands. The Dutch player won on the third additional hole to make her way into the semifinals.

The semifinals will see Taylor against Schmidt at 9:00, and Holmey against Noja at 9:10 local time. The finals will start at midday.
