Post Office workers to strike for three days this month – how to check if your branch will be affected

POST Office workers will stage fresh strikes for three days this month, a union announced today.

In an escalating row over pay, thousands of staff will walk out on August 26, 27 and 30.

The 24-hour industrial action is expected to impact Crown Post Offices, which are usually the larger branches on busier high streets, on all three dates.

Communication Workers Union members working in administrative and supply chain roles will also walk out on August 30.

As many as 117,000 employees from across the UK could stop work in pursuit of “fair pay rise for hardworking and dedicated staff”.

Though many sites will remain open, customers are urged to contact their local branches to find out whether they are operating.

Parcels and letters will still be able to be sent as normal from sub post-offices and WH Smith stores, it is anticipated.

The Post Office website has a branch finder tool that allows you to find your nearest shop using your postcode.

From there, you can check their opening hours or contact them directly.

CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey said: “We’re as determined as we have ever been to keep fighting and win a settlement that will protect our members’ standard of living through these exceptionally difficult economic times.”

He added that CWU employees were given no pay rise for 2021/22, and a three per cent bump for 2022/23.

“At a time when inflation is almost 12 per cent, a pay deal worth just three per cent over two years is incredibly insulting – it’s actually a huge pay cut in real terms,” Mr Furey said.

“Our members cannot and will not accept this massive lowering of their living standards – and their anger and determination have become stronger and stronger as this dispute has worn on.”

BT and Openreach workers are also staging walkouts in a dispute over pay – on August 30 and 31.

The second stoppage will coincide with the Post Office and Royal Mail action.
